Our tango lessons are based on the style of tango which the locals dance at the heart of Buenos Aires dance halls. In this style, the pleasure is more in the embrace or connection between partners and less of complex steps. In place of complicated footwork, interpretation of the music and its rhythms is important. Truly reflecting the social nature of the dance, the figures do not take up much room on the dance floor and there is respect for other dancers every moment of the dance. This is the preferred style in the crowded salons of Buenos Aires.

What Makes These Lessons Unique
These lessons focus on the authentic Close Embrace / Milonguero style (also called Apilado or Club style) — a way of dancing rarely taught in its true form in Vancouver.
Tango Salón dancers may also dance in close embrace, but this style is different in that:
This is the style danced every night in the traditional clubs of Buenos Aires and at Encuentros — the style Semiral has been teaching and practicing since 1996.
If you value real connection, refined technique, and dancing with ease in any milonga — these lessons are for you.

Tango Salón dancers may also dance in close embrace, but this style is different in that:
- The embrace remains truly close — you start in close embrace and you finish in close embrace.
- The upper-body connection is continuous, subtle, warm, and alive — not just an appearance of being close.
- The lead and follow technique is based on shared axis, upper body connection, and micro-movement – not on opening the embrace to execute large or flashy steps.
- The vocabulary is musical and compact, designed for dancing comfortably in crowded floors and small spaces.
- Movements are elegant, simple in appearance, and deeply connected — allowing dancers to feel the music together without interruption.
- The focus is internal: connection, musicality, comfort, clarity — rather than external appearance.

With over 30 years of experience in Argentine Tango, my journey began in London in 1993 under the legendary Carlos Gavito’s mentorship. After moving to Vancouver in 1995, I helped shape the local tango scene by organizing the city's first regular milongas and hosting renowned maestros.
I teach tango as a social dance, emphasizing the close-embrace milonguero style, musicality, and connection. My clear, step-by-step instruction helps dancers navigate the floor with confidence and improvisation. My lessons are “practical” which will allow you to start dancing from day one and become part of the vibrant Vancouver tango dance community.
Beyond teaching, I’ve performed internationally, DJed at major events, and remain passionate about sharing the essence of tango with others
